Did you know that on average, people in the U.S. produce 25% more waste during this time of year? Between presents, packaging, and those big, shared meals, it adds up! Here are some zero-waste tips for the holiday season from Seattle Public Utilities.
Give experiences, food, or shared events instead of objects. This could include tickets to a play, concert, movie or sporting event; museum membership; a cooking class; a subscription to a CSA food-share or local food co-op; or a gift card to a favorite restaurant.
Shop locally and mindfully. Shop at the local pottery store, artist’s studio, or jeweler for meaningful gifts that will last a long time and support the local economy. Or visit the local consignment or thrift store—buying used cuts down on waste and consumption.
Reconsider how you wrap gifts. Consider wrapping gifts in brown grocery bags hand-decorated by you or your kids or vintage napkins or scarves that can continue to be used after the holidays. Save and reuse bows, tissue paper, and holiday-themed boxes.
Use only reusable, recyclable, or compostable containers when entertaining.
